Core B:

Cardiometabolic Core

Core B ensures critical consistencies in cardiometabolic disease induction and assessment across Projects to uphold scientific rigor and reproducibility.

Aim 1:

Diet and Tissue

To employ standardized animal diets and specimen collection across all four projects

  • Animal housing
  • Phytoestrogen-free control diet (16% fat calories) and high-fat diet (60% fat calories)
  • Tissue and blood collection
  • Tissue and hormone analysis
  • Tissue bank
Aim 2:

Metabolic Assessment

To employ standardized metabolic measurements across all four projects

  • Body weight and glucose measurements
  • Body composition dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, or DXA
  • Glucose and insulin tolerance tests
  • Energy expenditure and activity measurements (TSE PhenoMaster System)
  • Hormone measurements (insulin, glucagon)

Aim 3:

Cardiovascular Assessment

To employ standardized cardiovascular measurements across all four projects

  • Angiotension II infusion
  • Telemetry probe recordings
  • Tail-cuff plethysmography
  • Spectral indices of cardiovascular autonomic tone
  • Cardiac and vascular ultrasound
  • Circulating measures  of the renin-angiotensin system
